Heading back in time, we also see a number of traces of establishments that were similar in nature to modern-day cafes. Taking a broad look at history, however, we see that "restaurants" in the modern sense did not exist before the late 18th century. The business that existed for as much as 5,000 years was the pub, the oldest place of business to provide people with the necessary tools for preparing food.
